About the NBA International Affiliates Meeting

The IAM is a major part of the National Bar Association’s (NBA's) international goal to create an environment to help foster social, political and economic development around the world. The IAM segment, established in 1991 by past NBA President Algenita Scott Davis and Vice President Ernestine Sapp, seeks to establish professional relationships with lawyers and judges of color throughout the African Diaspora and the world. In so doing, we form affiliations with the local country bar associations. We are in the 20th year of the IAM, and our Meetings have taken us to numerous countries. In 1991, the NBA held its first International Affiliate Chapter Meeting in Dakar, Senegal and Abidjan, Cote D' Ivoire. Since then, Affiliate Chapter Meetings have been held in London, England (1992); South Africa (1993, 1995, 2001, 2004 (with Botswana and Zimbabwe) & 2007 (with Zambia)); Toronto, Canada (1994); Accra, Ghana (1996); Bahia & Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1997); Tanzania and Kenya (1998); Israel and Jordan (1999); London, England and Paris, France (2000); Italy (2002); [IAM cancelled in 2003]; Spain and Canary Islands (2005); Ethiopia and Kenya (2006); Cuba (2008) and Egypt & Dubai (2009).

The several objectives of the International Affiliates Meeting are:

  •  To foster social, political and economic development among NBA members and other lawyers, judges and legal scholars throughout the African Diaspora
  • To provide an opportunity for NBA members to confer with dignitaries, elected officials, judges, barristers and solicitors; and to exchange views and information about the US legal system, economic development and different societies; and
  • To expand collaborative relationships between NBA members and lawyers of African descent and of color throughout the African Diaspora.
+ Continuing Legal Education certification will be administered by the National Bar Association
