TWO LAW SCHOOL DEANS ADVOCATE FOR A LAW SCHOOL DIVERSITY INDEX
April 8, 2010
In response to a statement made by U.S. News's point person for law school ratings, Bob Morse, wherein Mr. Morse expressed openness to thinking about incorporating a "diversity index" into the U.S. New's & Wold Report Law School ratings methodology, two law school deans articulate in elequent pros but with authoritative objectivety and data that a diversity index for law schools is both relevant and necesaary because the Supreme Court recognized and proclaimed in recent years – a diverse school provides a richer learning environment for its students, who will then be better prepared, going forward, to enter and succeed in the realm of diversity that is the entire United States and the world. In their article "Why U.S. News and World Report Should Include A Diversity Index in its Ranking of Law Schools", Vikram David Amar, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor Law at the University of California, Davis School of Law, and Kevin R. Johnson, the Dean of the School of Law and the Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o Studies at the University of California, Davis, addreswhy diversity is pursued in law schools and why it belongs in law school rankings with the caveat that regional rankings that take into consideration a law schools population demographics is also necessary.
